This week we will continue to learn how to find the theme in a story. Remember that a theme is the message, a lesson or an idea about life that the writer wants us to learn from the story.  There are many common themes that we can learn from stories. We can learn about love, being brave, death, happiness among others. People see themes that relate to their own life experiences. Everyone will see different themes in what we view or read based on our own personal experiences. So a theme is subjective, meaning that it depends on you.

Let's watch this video to help us understand more about themes:

Questions to ask yourself as you watch:

What does the character like doing?
What is a problem for the character?
What does the character think/do about the problem?

Science:

This week we will continue learning about the human body and the organs systems that keep it alive. Our bodies are kept alive  through homeostasis. This means that our bodies work to keep what is happening inside them the same all the time. This can be our body temperature or even how much water is in our bodies.

Let's watch the video to see experiments about homeostasis in our bodies:

Next let's practice what we learned here

One thing that this Empire was known for was trading.  This means that people paid for good and services  with something similar to money. We will watch and learn about how the Empire rose, how long it lasted and what factors made it fall. Then we will make connections to our lives. We will ask ourselves:
  • -What are good and services?
  • -What does it look like in my community?
  • -How do I or the people I know participate in trading?

Let's watch the video about the Empire of Ghana:

Now let's review what we learned in earlier grades about goods and services:

Now let's think about our own lives. We buy things and others pay us to do something for them. Let's practice here.

This week we will learning how to find the central idea in an informational text. An informational text gives us factual or true facts about a topic. The central idea is what the text is all about.

Let's continue exploring unbalanced forces in order to understand Newtons' First Law of Motion.

Let's watch the video, Click Here , on Generation Genius:

You will learn that:
Force has both strength and direction.
Unbalanced forces cause an object to change its motion.
Balanced forces do not cause a change in motion.

Next, watch the video about an egg drop using the Inertia:

If you have the materials at home,  please carry out this simple egg drop experiment under Procedure on the Generation Genius page with your parents.

Next, let's play an online quiz to see what you learned from the video and/or experiment! Good luck!

Social Studies

This week we will be beginning our exploration of the Golden Age in African Empires. Before we talk about these empires, let's get a better understanding of the continent of Africa and its amazing people by looking at a monumental time in its history-- the Bantu Migration.

Let's watch a video to learn more about the Bantu Migration

Interview (as your family members questions) to find out if they or their family members have always lived in New York City. If not where did your family members begin their migration? Who came from where?

Questions you can ask your family:

1. Did you always live in NYC?
2. Where did our family members come from?
3. Why did they decide to come to NYC?

Next:

Draw a picture to show your family's heritage and honoring where they came from. It could be of a favorite meal, a type of dress or a word in another language. Post your photo or video on ClassDojo.

For example,  my family now lives in New York City but we began our journey from Jamaica and France and before that from Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania and Senegal in Africa. My drawing would be of the national dish in Jamaica which is ackee and salt fish. It's delicious!
