Rocks and Minerals!

You see them all around you everyday but have you ever stopped to think about where rocks really come from?

How are they, if at all, different from minerals?

Today, we will find out by watching informational videos and by reading nonfiction texts.

First, stop by Types of Rocks 1 and  Types of Rocks 2 to learn more about the different types of rocks.

Then swing by Rocks vs Minerals to learn about the difference between rocks and minerals.

When you are done, complete the following questions in your science notebooks:

Assignment 1: Comprehension
In your own words:
1. Define  a rock.
2. Identify the different types of rocks.
3. Compare and contrast rocks to minerals using terms, such as, in contrast to, while, on the other hand.

Assignment 2: Individual Essay
(Find resources for your essay Resource 1 and Resource 2)

4. With your group prepare an essay that will be displayed in the classroom about your assigned rock type.
In your essay, you will include:

  •  a diagram (drawing) of your rock type along
  •  a definition
  • information about how your rock type is formed and where it is most commonly found.
  • Try to spice up your writing by writing an interesting lead or asking an engaging question.
  • Choose the text structure that you will use to organize your work  (will it be compare and contrast, question and answer?)
